Discharge Guidelines for Wound Care

Once you or a loved one is back at home after a surgery, recovery is the next step. Proper wound care is an important part of the recovery process, so make sure you have all the supplies you need to treat your wounds, including: sterile gloves, outer dressing material (bandages), packing material if needed, sterile wetting solution, therapy packs and pads, tape, cotton swabs, scissors and a clean towel and bowl.

Keep the wound clean and dry. If a bandage was applied and it becomes wet or dirty, replace it. Otherwise, leave it in place for the first 24 hours. After removing the bandage, clean the area with soap and water daily. If any bleeding occurs, cover the area with sterile gauze or a clean towel and apply full pressure for at least 5 minutes, giving time for a clot to form. Return to the hospital if the wound doesn’t stop bleeding.

Most skin wounds heal within ten days, but an infection can occur even with proper treatment, so it’s important to check the wound daily for signs of infection. Normal showering is fine after 24 hours, but avoid soaking the wound in a bath or swimming until your doctor gives you the okay. Contact your doctor right away if you notice: bleeding that won’t stop with direct pressure, redness around the wound, increased swelling or pus coming from the wound, or shaking chills and a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
